rock bands

i recently got into the rock scene because of the japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK.

when i discovered them, i thought i was entering a new world, but i realised i'm not totally new to it.

i was just never that interested in exploring and knowing this genre more.

i grew up listening to rock being blasted through the speakers of a small radio as my uncles tear apart and put back pieces of their cars while i take pictures of our grandmother's garden. it was always played in the background in the house.

me and my cousins (yes not only my immediate but also distant cousins because we were all neighbours and lived in the same street) would gather on the computer at my grandmother's house and sing along to these songs together. literally all of us in a small room because it's the only computer at our street at the time.

i grew up listening and singing along to my friends and classmates who play these songs in acoustic guitars where we would have a jamming session, in the classroom, in between classes while waiting for the teacher to come, the canteen, the stairs, the hallway, literally could be anywhere just have a guitar and play songs. singing is a huge thing in my culture. there's always someone who knows a lot of songs and plays them on the guitar.

there was a time where we were not allowed to eat our food and lunches in the classroom. the teachers always assume we behave like wild animals. which i guess we were at times, but they think too negatively of us. anyways, we go to the canteen, get our food, and go back to the hallway. we would just sit on the floor, eat our food while chatting with one another. that's how we would spend our break times.

with everyone in the hallway, someone plays a famous rock song in the guitar, eventually there would be a live concert happening. even if others are not in the same year as us, upper or lower years, they would join in.

it was nice.. we would be unified through music.

also my classmates literally performed as a band in school! my classmates in my year was the most iconic band that school has ever had. the members of the band were not only talented in the instruments they play, they were also students on top of the class!

now that i think about it, how come they weren't popular?... what was i doing?

every time they perform, i always liked the feeling of hearing them live through the speakers. i always had goosebumps when they play the first part of a song. singing along with the whole high school department as my classmates put the stage on fire with their performance.

every member, the bassist, the guitarist, the drummer, the vocalist. they all compliment each other so much that the energy and chemistry is amplified to the audience who mirrors that energy back to them.

i'm always grateful for having these memories that are fun to look back to when you're being directed back by things you discover later on in life.
