family affair - mary j. blige

i kid you not that song is the highlight of my day.

right picture this.

a lovely sunny day, clear blue sky, everyone's wearing their sunglasses, the outdoor tables of restaurants are packed, loud conversations and laughter on top of music heard from inside the restaurant, many tours and field trips with their massive cameras, buskers scattered everywhere in the city, just a wonderful sunny day.

me and my friend are on the sidewalk, he was looking at his phone. he’s good at directions, the best at it, i just follow him because i have no sense of direction. so, while he’s scrolling through google maps and mentally memorising the path. this car was behind us. it was a red light. and blasting this song. we were vibing, feet going left and right, heads bopping to the beat, we were vibing on the side walk from this persons speakers.

and then the song was stuck on our head…. and it’s the only thing playing in our head…

just kept “let’s get this tenen ten ten tenen ten ten tenenen ten ten ten” on replay. we kept walking trying to figure out the song. we can taste it alright, the song is right. there.

what’s it called? how does it go again? what’s the lyrics? “let’s get this jumpin tenen tenen tenen tenenen ten ten ten”

googling “it’s getting hotter pump the gasoline song” “girl groups in destinys child era” “girl pop song with the lyrics lets get this” “pop song with the lyrics its getting bumpy” “pop song with the lyrics its getting”

reading these searches now, if google had a face, it would be a face of absolute confusion

we stopped walking. saw this statue, sat under it. and tried to message our friends if they know what the song was. and our friends just went "oh i know the song but idk the title" .....

we gave up and focused on our plans for the day instead.

and then, on the bus home, i tried again and when i tell you the shock of satisfaction that electrocuted me when i heard the first beat of the song from my earphones. was insane. i audibly gasped which elicited a worried and alert reaction from my friend who rolled his eyes when i showed him my phone with the title of the song. (he was probably expecting big news, sorry for scaring ya)

google caught what i meant when i typed “lets get it jumping song lyrics girl pop”

lesson learned: if you get a song stuck in your head, even if it's just tenenen keep googling.
